Where is my comfort zone
What is comfort zone :
Basically it’s where you feel safe because everything around you is familiar. You do most things out of habit and most of the time you’re not conscious about what you’re doing.
If something isn’t challenging for you anymore, then it’s in your comfort zone.
How to identify mine
Write down all your activities in a day for 1 week, and that’s because you might be doing different activities during the week. Then score them from 1-3 based on how hard or challenging each task is for you. 1 is a habit, or an activity that you can do without so much effort or conscious thinking. 2 is a task that you are not a pro, but you can do with little effort. And 3 is a challenging task.
Then based on your vision, identify these 3 things:
What you should keep : The score might be 1-3, but these are the tasks related to parts of your life that don’t need to be changed right now, or the change in these areas are not your priority.
What needs to be removed : The score can vary, but because it doesn’t serve you any more, you should remove it.
What needs to be improved : These are the tasks with score 1 or 2. Make it 1% better, it should be challenging enough to motivate you, but not too much to drain your energy and confidence.
What is my white rabbit?
Your unique curiosity.
Think about what you liked in your childhood.
Reflect on your thoughts about different things in your life and world in general see which one makes you curious.
Think about what activities you used to enjoy as a kid.
The unique set of activities, topics that you are passionate and curious about is your white rabbit, so deep dive into these topics and see what changes in your concept of the world and yourself.
Why is self knowledge the first step
As we discussed earlier, in order to achieve your goals and live a life that you really want and enjoy, you have to make different choices. These choices might be the ones that you’ve been avoiding for a long time because they are unfamiliar and they scare you. So you have to step into the unknown. But first of all, you need to clearly define the line that separates your comfort zone from your desired life. In order to do that you must have a strong sense of self and purpose which comes from self knowledge. So seat down with your thoughts and reflect on these 3 topics:
Your strengths
Your weaknesses
Your previous choices that have led you here, and what you used to believe.
Then compare that to your future image that we’ve worked on in previous lessons, and change what needs to be changed.
What is a rabbit hole?
When you start your journey on self knowledge, you are jumping into the rabbit hole. You have to travel in time, go to the past and question your beliefs about almost everything and your choices that you believe that are yours ( which are NOT). Then you have to go to the future and picture yourself in details that you can foresee. Then come back and settle down in the present, as it’s the only real time that you can make a difference.
Don’t live for your past dedications, live for your future vision.
How to identify what needs to be changed
Ask yourself these questions, and turn your answers into small action steps and really get yourself to do them:
What is not serving my life now ( beliefs, habits, values, etc.)
What is hurting me ( thought patterns, feelings, people, habits, etc.)
What thoughts stop me from doing what I’m supposed to do
After that, you need to change, but how to? This is my system for change that I’ve been doing for 5 years now:
Choose one action step that affects your life in a great way and makes a positive difference. Do it for 1 week straight. Reflect on your progress and feelings every day. Make any necessary changes at the end of the week and repeat it.
Now see if this change really helps you and changes your life in a positive and meaningful way. If yes, make it a habit, if not write down why it didn’t work out and what you can do now, then repeat step 1.
Make what works a habit and always remember to reflect and refresh your mind and habits every 3-6 months. Maybe there isn’t much to change, or maybe after sometime you change your mind, and that’s absolutely fine.
Stepping out: small steps over big jumps
Should I jump in right away? Or can I take smaller steps? You jump in by dedicating yourself to do the work
Everyone who knows me, knows that I’m a huge fan of small steps. I don’t believe in big steps except for some specific situations. And that is because you can only change a structure by replacing the existing blocks one by one, other than that your new structure won’t be strong enough to support your vision.
My second reason is that if you make abrupt and big changes it’ll exhaust your willpower and you might give up before seeing the actual results.
Here is a pro tip: Remember to celebrate small wins. It really can change your self image for the best.
And my final word is, be patient with yourself and the process, don’t let the world get to you until you can get through it all and make it work for you.
How to balance your comfort zone and growth zone?
Expand Your Comfort Zone Gradually
Take small, achievable steps outside your comfort zone regularly. Don't try to overhaul your life overnight.
Set specific goals that push you just beyond your current abilities. Gradually increase the difficulty as you gain experience.
Celebrate small wins along the way to stay motivated for continued progress.
Embrace Discomfort and Failure as Opportunities
Recognize that some discomfort is necessary for growth. Avoid the panic zone of overwhelming anxiety, but lean into the growth zone.
Reframe failures as learning experiences. Each setback provides valuable lessons for future endeavors.
Trust that with patience and perseverance, relief and ease will come after periods of hardship.
Maintain a Healthy Balance
Regularly reflect on whether you are spending too much time in your comfort zone or pushing yourself too far into the stress zone.
Alternate between challenging yourself and allowing periods of rest and relaxation. Burnout can occur from excessive time in the growth zone.
Trust in Allah's provision and sustenance (rizq) so you don't become overly attached to the comfort zone.
Develop Self-Awareness and Adaptability
Cultivate self-awareness to recognize when you are in each zone and make conscious choices about where to focus.
Embrace change and uncertainty. Adaptability is key to thriving in the growth zone.
Maintain a growth mindset. Believe in your ability to expand your skills and comfort zone over time.
The key is to regularly step out of your comfort zone to learn and grow, while still allowing yourself periods of stability and rest. With patience, self-awareness and a willingness to embrace discomfort, you can strike a healthy balance between the comfort zone and growth zone.
Some small, actionable steps you can take to start moving from your comfort zone into your growth zone:
Try a new hobby or activity: Sign up for a class or workshop in something you've always wanted to try, like painting, coding, or a new sport. Engaging in a novel activity pushes you to learn new skills.
Speak up more in meetings: If you tend to be quiet in group settings, challenge yourself to share your ideas and opinions more frequently. This can help build your confidence.
Take on a small work project outside your usual responsibilities: Volunteer for a task or assignment that will require you to learn new things. This expands your skillset.
Initiate a conversation with a stranger: Strike up a chat with someone you don't know at the grocery store, gym, or a local event. This can help overcome social anxiety.
Read a book or listen to a podcast on a topic you know little about: Expose yourself to new ideas and perspectives to broaden your horizons.
Take a different route to work or try a new restaurant: Changing your routine, even in small ways, can make you more comfortable with uncertainty.
Schedule a check-in with yourself: Regularly reflect on what's working, what's not, and what small steps you can take next to keep expanding your comfort zone.
The key is to start small and gradually increase the difficulty as you build confidence. Celebrate each small win, and don't be discouraged by setbacks. Consistent, incremental progress is the path to lasting growth.
